Biography of newly-departed Archpriest Alexei Poliakov

On Friday, June 24, on the day of the celebration Icon of the Mother of God "It is Truly Meet,” at the age of 63, Archpriest Alexei Poliakov, a cleric of the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral in Los Angeles, CA, reposed in the Lord. Father Alexei reposed unexpectedly in the presence of his beloved family,  Matushka Marina, and their children.

Father Alexei Petrovich Polyakov was born on February 5, 1959, in a priest's family. His father, Archpriest Peter Poliakov, served for more than 50 years in the Moscow Diocese and served as a Rector of several consecutive parishes in both the rural and suburban regions around Moscow.

In 1982, Father Alexei graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the Moscow State Pedagogical University. After graduation, he worked as a teacher of Russian language and literature in a high school in Moscow. In 1989 he received a second bachelor’s degree, graduating from the Faculty of English at the Moscow Regional Pedagogical University.

From childhood, Father Alexei served as an acolyte in those churches where his father served.

In July 1990, Father Alexei, while on a personal trip to the United States, received the blessing of Archpriest Alexander Mileant to live at the Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos on Argyll Blvd in Hollywood, CA, where he performed the duties of a reader and an acolyte. He also edited the parish’s missionary pamphlets (a project led by Archpriest and later Bishop Alexander Mileant, and taught in the parish school.

In 1997, Father Alexei married Marina Alexandrovna Poliakova. Their family has two sons, Mikhail and Mark, and a daughter, Emilia.

On February 14, 1999, Alexei Poliakov was ordained to the diaconate by the bishop of South American Alexander (Mileant) and was appointed to serve at the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral in Los Angeles. August 19, 2005, Archbishop of San Francisco and Western America Kyrill (Dimitriev) ordained Father Alexei to the priesthood.

For 23 years Father Alexey served in our church and preached Divine Truth. The life of the newly-departed Archpriest Alexei Poliakov took place in the constant presence of God. A whole generation of our parishioners grew spiritually and were strengthened by his sermons.

May the Lord give him rest in the Kingdom of Heaven. Eternal memory!
